Now that there is no snow on the ground, you could try to play the Finnish outdoor game Mölkky. This is something you want to cross off your "only in Finland"-list! The game is very simple and you can play it with as many friends as you want. The goal is to collect exactly 50 points by throwing a wooden skittle and knocking over wooden pins that have numbers from 1 to 12.

ISYY office opening hours during the spring

• The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) offices in Joensuu and Kuopio campus are exceptionally closed on Thursday 14.5. because of Ascension Day.
• During the first weeks of June ISYY offices are open only by prior appointment. Please book an appointment by taking contact to the office via phone or email.
• ISYY offices will be closed 11.6.–2.8. and the offices will open again on Monday 3 August.

ISYY's Vappu Eve speeches

Speeches of the Student Union on Vappu Eve have been published on the ISYY website! The speeches carried a strong message of community and how student years shape us. We don't just study for our degrees; we grow as individuals, build lifelong friendships, and lay the foundation for a better tomorrow. There are lots of different people at the university, and desppite that we are all part of the same community.

Instructed cycling tour on 8.5.

We are organizing two guided cycling rides on Friday, May 8. You can choose between a relaxed ride of approximately 20 km or a faster ride of around 50 km.

The relaxed ride starts at 3:00 PM and the faster ride at 5:00 PM. The meeting point is the backyard of the ISYY office (Suvantokatu 6).

Registration takes place via the sports calendar, where you can also find more information about the event.

Please bring your own bike, a helmet (mandatory), and a water bottle!

Bike Service Point at UEF May 12 3-5 PM.

To celebrate National Cycling Week, SYKETTÄ will organize a bike service point at the UEF Carelia campus on May 12 from 3–5 PM.

At the service point, you can pump your tires, oil your chain, and get help with small adjustments.

Come and get your bike ready for summer!

SYKETTÄ regular turn application for student and staff groups 2026-2027

UEF and Karelia UAS student and staff groups can apply for regular turn. Application forms is now open and will close on 10.5.2026 at 23:55 o' clock.

Each turn must have 1-2 responsible persons. The turn cannot be granted before it has at least one responsible person. Responsible persons have to check that everybody, who are participating, has a valid SYKETTÄ membership. Responsible persons will also take care of general order, report the number of participants and if necessary cancel the turn by contacting SYKETTÄ staff members. Detailed instructions are sent to applicants in August.

Regular turn will be 55 minutes (e.g. at 7pm-7:55pm). We recommend, that smaller groups (on average under 10 participants per turn) apply in cooperation with another group.

Library celebrates Pride

We will be celebrating North Karelia Pride at the Joensuu Campus Library in May. Explore our traditional Pride book display at the Joensuu Campus Library from 4–25 May 2026, and on UEF Primo at any time. Once again, you can borrow a Pride flag to take with you to the celebrations! In Joensuu, a limited number of flags will be available for loan from 4–25 May 2026. The loan period is 14 days.

Summery bossa nova concert 6 May 2026 at Joensuu campus

Welcome to listen to Johannes Valve and Manta Korajoki's piano & guitar ensemble on Wed 6 May at 14:00–14:30 in the Carelia lobby. The concert will feature summery bossa nova and jazz melodies.  

The concert is part of the cultural collaboration between the University of Eastern Finland and the City of Joensuu.

Join the workshop: The New Moodle from a Student’s Perspective 8.5.2026 at 10.15

At the University of Eastern Finland, a new Moodle learning environment will be introduced at the end of July 2026. We invite students to join a workshop where you can explore the new Moodle from a student’s point of view.

In the workshop, we will show for example:

• What the new Moodle looks like
• What the differences are between the new and the current eLearn Moodle
• How course search works
• We will also collect ideas and feedback on the course search features.

Who, where, and when?

The workshop is open to all University of Eastern Finland students who want to get familiar with the new Moodle in advance and take part in developing its course search features. The workshop will be held online (Teams) and in English.

YUFE already has over 20 complete minor subjects that can be completed during a six-month exchange.

Hi student, respond to the survey on students’ housing preferences!

Finnish Associations of Student Housing Organisations (SOA) and the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) are conducting a survey on higher education students’ housing preferences. The survey examines students’ housing preferences and needs as well as their order of importance when students choose their housing. 

The results of the survey will be used in decisions concerning the future of student housing and in advocacy work on behalf of higher education students. Your answers are valuable and important! A prize draw of S Group gift cards worth €50 is organised for the respondents. 

The survey is open until May 17!

The year-long project planning phase for campus development is coming to an end. A large number of staff members and students have taken part in the workshops concerning UEF’s buildings.

The plans developed as a result of the workshops and other extensive expert work will be presented in campus-specific webinars. All members of the UEF community are welcome to attend and join the discussion!

Finnish Student Health Service will launch a new digital service platform for higher education students. YTHSDigi allows you to use the FSHS services digitally, either via a mobile app downloaded to your phone or through a web browser.

With YTHSDigi, you can take care of health-related matters at a time that suits you best. YTHSDigi brings all FSHS digital services together into one place.

Joensuu's Exchange and International Students Farewell Party on 15 May!

As the spring semester comes to a beautiful close, it’s time to gather one last time and celebrate the memories we’ve made together… and say goodbye to some amazing JEIS members. It’s never easy to say farewell, but let’s make it special! Expect a cozy night filled with familiar faces, laughter, little activities, snacks, and heartfelt moments to share and remember.

The city of Joensuu pilots an Internationalisation voucher for companies

The Internationalisation Voucher is a one-off subsidy the City of Joensuu grants to a company that employs an international student.

The voucher helps international talents find employment, whilst also answering to the competence needs of the companies operating in Joensuu.

Learn more and mention this to employers when discussing job or internship opportunities, for example during your application or interviewing process.

Dance through the darker fairytales of the Brothers Grimm on Saturday, 9th of May at HUB Joensuu, Rantakatu 30.

Dress up as your favourite fantastical beings and fairytale characters. We are dancing historical social dances.
