ISYY office opening hours during the spring

• During the first weeks of June ISYY offices are open only by prior appointment. Please book an appointment by taking contact to the office via phone or email.
• ISYY offices will be closed 11.6.–2.8. and the offices will open again on Monday 3 August.

Thank you for aswering the ISYY member survey!

The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) organised a survey for its members this spring. The member survey’s purpose was to collect information about how familiar our members are with the Student Union and its services, collect feedback about our services and also ideas how to improve our services, activities and communication.

We got 671 answers in total. Thank you to everyone who answered the survey!

We will now start going through the answers and later in autumn we will publish more information regarding the results.

North Karelia Pride Parade and Park Picnic 23 May

ISYY will once again take part in the Pride parade and, together with Pohjois-Karjala Seta ry, will organise a park picnic on Saturday 23 May in Joensuu!

Equality and transparency are important values for ISYY. ISYY encourages all its members to take part in the Pride parade’s ISYY block and the park picnic, as well as to wear student overalls to form a rainbow.

The parade starts at 1 pm at the Suvantosilta from the town center side of the river. The parade arrives to Ilosaari around 2pm. In the picnic-area you can find a family café, together-zone, sales stands, ISYY’s glitter make-up station and of course great company! At the ISYY Glitter make-up station you can decorate yourself with glitter for the evening's Pride party.

The first 150 students at the ISYY’s station will be given ISYY's Pride-Hemmo overall patch as a memory.

The call for new representatives for the YUFE Student Forum closes today at 5 pm!

If you communicate well in English, are interested in student-centeredness, equality, diversity and inclusivity in the core of making an impact, and you have at least one year left of studies before you graduate, YUFE might be just the right place for you!

SYKETTÄ in Summer 2026

SYKETTÄ keeps you moving throughout the summer! All summer sports services and updates can be found on our website, which will be updated as activities are confirmed. Registration for all summer classes and sessions takes place through the sports calendar. Both the group exercise sticker and the ball sports sticker give access to all summer activities.

This summer’s schedule includes guided stair workouts with physical activity counsellor Anni, JoenVoLi summer classes, and individual outdoor exercise guidance. In addition, Mehtimäki Hall offers ball sports sessions and open dance sessions throughout the summer. Portti54 and Aurora gyms are open all summer.

Please note that the Tikkarinne gym is closed from June 15 to August 9, 2026. The Joensuu Areena gym is open according to the venue’s opening hours.

SAMOK and SYL want to hear students’ views on FSHS – answer the survey!

Do you want to influence FSHS’s services? SYL and SAMOK have made an FSHS survey for higher education students. The survey aims to gather students’ views about FSHS services. The results are used in advocacy work. The survey is open 18.5.-5.6.

UEF Occupational Health and Safety Committee encourages moderate use of perfumes and fragrances

The Occupational Health and Safety Committee reminds that the use of strong perfumes and fragrances may cause allergic symptoms.

The number of people at the university is large and so is the range of different scents. Please keep in mind that your colleagues, students, fellow students, teachers or customers may be allergic to perfumes and fragrances. A small action can make the everyday life of people around you easier and also the entire university a more comfortable environment for us all. Taking other people into consideration is a matter of small actions.

The student website Kamu is being reformed

The Kamu online service for students has been reformed, and the new and improved website will be published on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. The address is the same as before: kamu.uef.fi/en.

Kamu continues to bring together the instructions, tools and links to different services that are needed in the studies, but the website has been developed based on student feedback to make it clearer and easier to use.

Webinar on May 22 2026: Evaluation of International degree programmes

UEF will conduct an evaluation of all International degree programmes, starting with a self-evaluation phase in spring 2026 and concluding with a site visit by an evaluation panel in late autumn 2026. The evaluation is based on self-assessment, existing supporting materials, and the programmes’ own analysis.

An open webinar on the implementation of the self-evaluation will be organised on 22 May 2026 from 9:00 to 10:00

Africa Day 2026 at UEF

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the African Union, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 25th May, 1963. Africa Day is celebrated around the world and is an opportunity to appreciate and mark the African continent’s diverse history and heritage, while acknowledging its cultural and economic potential.

At the University of Eastern Finland, Africa Day represents an opportunity to acknowledge a diverse and important group of scholars and academics who enrich and make a valuable contribution to education and research in and on Africa.

UEF will have a series of different activities and communications about our collaborations with our African colleagues, partner institutions and networks.

• The Kuopio Campus Library will be closed from 6 July to 26 July 2026. Regardless of which campus library you use, please note that during this closure, materials will not be transported between the Joensuu and Kuopio campus libraries. Please reserve the materials you need well in advance. Loan periods at both locations will extend over the Kuopio closure period.
• Interlibrary services will be closed from 6 July to 2 August 2026. Please submit any interlibrary loan requests in advance. We will process the requests made during the closure in order of arrival and get back to you, if necessary.

SYL: The overall reform of student financial aid is a total bust

Orpo’s government has outlined measures for the overall reform of student financial aid in its spending limits discussion. In line with the Government Programme, the primary objective of the reform of student financial aid was to enable full-time studies, but the proposed solution is completely half-baked.

“The reform is a disappointment. It’s made up of small, fragmented fixes that don’t solve the key problem, which is that the aid is not enough. Studying full-time continues to be a distant dream for many people”, emphasises Laura Heino, member of the board responsible for social policy.

Joensuu Summer Opening 23 May 2026

The Summer Opening event will take place at the Joensuu Market Square on Saturday, 23 May 2026, from 9:00 to 17:00.

The event marks the official start of the summer season across North Karelia. This one‑day market event brings together regional tourism operators, North Karelian villages, and a wide range of attractions — including companies, summer theatres, and the most exciting events of the upcoming season.

We invite you to join the event and bring along your village’s cultural actors, small businesses, local delicacies, and unique specialties.

Joen Yö Performer Call – Sign Up Now!

Jobs, internships and appointments to UEF career counsellors in JobTeaser

Job and internship offers for students and recent graduates can be found in the JobTeaser webservice. Students and staff members log into the JobTeaser UEF platform using their UEF credentials. You can continue using the service after graduation. JobTeaser is used in over 700 universities and institutions of higher education in Europe and job and internship offers spread throughout Europe.

• You can book a personal appointment to a UEF career counsellor in JobTeaser. Guidance is available on both campuses and online.
• You will also find a selection of various sorts of events organized by, for example, TE-Live, EURES, different projects and employer organizations. Many of the events are online. Thus, you can take part in interesting events elsewhere in Europe. There are also employer profiles and information of job opportunities in, especially, international companies and employers.
• In JobTeaser, you will also find info about the UEF career services and courses on job seeking and career planning.
