Spring semester is coming to an end and people are either heading back home or getting ready for summer activities. Hopefully you've had a wonderful semester and enjoyed your time in Kuopio and at the University of Eastern Finland!

Office opening hours during summer

ISYY offices are on summer holiday 12.6.-3.8. (closed) and will be back at your service after the holiday on Monday 4 August. Before the summer holiday, we will be at your service as follows:

ISYY Joensuu office is moving

ISYY office in Joensuu is moving during the summer, and on Moday 4 August onwards we will be serving in new address Suvantokatu 6. New office is located in street level next to K-Citymarket Joensuu keskusta. On our website you can find a map to help you get to the office, if visiting Joensuu.

Registration for the next Academic Year begins 1.6.

Hey continuing student! Registration for the UEF Academic Year 2025–2026 will begin this week on Sunday 1 June. Registration periods for the next academic year are:

Registration for the year 2024–2025 begins on 1 June and ends on 15 September 2025
Registration ONLY for the spring semester 2026 is 1.11.2025–15.1.2026

When you register as a present student and you pay the ISYY membership fee at the same time, you’ll get all of our member services also for the next academic year. ISYY membership will help you during your studies, e.g. with our interest advocacy services. Get to know all of our member services by going through our website, and you’ll make to most of your membership!

Student representatives wanted!

Are you interested in making an impact and representing students? Now is your chance to step into decision-making! ISYY is looking for three (3) student deputy representatives to Faculty Council of the Faculty of Health Sciences. This is supplementary application, and position ends on 31.12.2025.

Meeting fee is paid for participation in the meetings of the Faculty Council. In addition, it is possible to apply for study credits for participation in administrative and working group work at the end of the term of office.

Person who has the right to complete a bachelor's or master's degree or a licentiate or doctoral doctoral degree at the Faculty of Health Sciences or who has the right to study as an alumni student at the faculty is eligible to become a student representative in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Justified applications and possible CVs should be submitted to the Student Union's Specialist in Educational and Social Policy Mikko Aaltonen at koso(at)isyy.fi by Monday 2.6.2025 at 12.00 (noon).

Apply for a band shift at Studentia rehearsal space for summer!

You can now apply for a shift at Studentia Band Reheasal Space for the summer by filling an online application form. The application form closes on Tuesday 27 May. Summer shifts are valid 1.6.-31.8.2025.

One shift is max. 2 hours. Studentia is open during summer only on workdays (Mon-Fri) and the shifts can be applied between 8 am and 4 pm (except for Wednesday until 6 pm).

Kuopio Pride 7 June

ISYY is participating in Kuopio Pride on Saturday 7 June. Equality and transparency are important values for ISYY. ISYY encourages all its members to take part in the Pride parade and park festival, as well as to wear student overalls to form a rainbow.

Parade will leave behind Kuopio Adult Education Centre (Kuopion kansalaisopisto) at 2 pm, and it ends at the Snellman park.

ISYY has its own area in Snellman park that brings together all students. The first 150 students at the ISYY’s picnic-area will be given ISYY's Pride-Hemmo overall patch as a memory.

Do you ride a bike?

Join the SYKETTÄ Kuopio team! Kilometrikisa is a light-hearted cycling competition for workplaces, departments, associations, clubs or any other teams. The aim is to encourage bicycle commuting and promote everyday cycling. Kilometrikisa will be held between 1.5.-30.9.2025.

In Kilometrikisa every team member will record their cycling kilometers and the team with the highest number of kilometers will win. All UEF and Savonia UAS staff members and students are welcome to attend the SYKETTÄ Kuopio team!

Current topics

UEF info session on 28 May 2025 at 9:00–10:00

Welcome to a UEF info session on Wednesday 28 May 2025 starting at 9:00. The topics of the UEF info session include new openings in research, innovation and research training, as well as the development of academic leadership at UEF and calls for applications for unit head positions.

The event will be attended by Rector Tapio Määttä, Vice Rector for Research Jussi Pihlajamäki and Vice Rector for Education Laura Hirsto, as well as Director of Administration Tuomo Meriläinen.

UEF library services in the summer of 2025

Due to Ascension Day, all UEF library offices will close on Wednesday 28 May 2025 as early as 1 pm and will be closed on Thursday 29 May 2025.

KELA: Housing benefits for students about to change in August

Students will be transferred under a new housing supplement scheme in August. The majority of students can get the new student housing supplement from the beginning of the autumn term 2025. Plese go and read on Kela's website what you as a student should know about the changes in housing allowances.

Welcome to Hexacon 2025 board game event!

Want to do something more than just cottage trips and barbecues on a summer weekend? Now’s your chance to focus on what really matters – board gaming, even in the summer!

Board Game Club Kärmes is organizing Hexacon 2025 board game event held in Kuopio 27-29.6.2025 (Friday-Sunday). The event follows ISYY's principles of safe space.

Come play your favorite games or try new board games in good company.

Take part in the A Piece of Space art project!

The project, directed by artist Tea Andreoletti, will reflect on the future of Culture Workshop Konepaja and issues of justice and civic engagement. The project is free and open to everyone. During the next meetings we’ll start working on the preparation of the performative gathering that will take place at the ANTI Festival 2025!

Next meetings between May 28th and June 4th at Culture Workshop Konepaja (Pohjolankatu 1, 70500 Kuopio).

Surviving in Finland: Summer edition

Even though Finland is all about the postcard-worthy winter wonderland, summer in the nordic countries can also be a rather exotic experience. If you thought the mid-winter darkness would never cease, well guess what - now it’s sunlight (almost) around the clock! Here are some tips and tricks for a hassle-free summer in Finland:

Finnish summer is all about the midnight sun, so find ways to enjoy it! Go for a nighttime swim or a stroll.
Buy blackout curtains or a sleep mask if the sunlight bothers you at night. If you don’t feel like buying these items, you could attach a black sheet on your window.
Two words: mosquito repellent. You can find this in literally every store (and kiosk) as a spray, roll-on and even an electronic device that gives you a mosquito-free personal bubble.
Watch out for snakes if you pick berries in a forest. The only poisonous snake in Finland is viper. You can wear rubber boots to prevent bites.
Although Finland isn’t as hot as Southern countries, use sunblock here too.
Remember to drink lots of water during hot days.

Summer bucket list

Are you spending the summer in Finland? After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’) summer is finally approaching fast so in the honor of this last Weekly Feed, we collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here are some ideas how:

Play mölkky or try frisbeegolf (ISYY members can loan sports equipment from the office for free)
Grill sausages or bake tikkupulla on a campfire
Swim in a lake to throw away your winter coat (heittää talviturkki in Finnish, means to swim in a lake for the first time after winter). You can find a list of beaches in Kuopio on Kuopio's website here.
Watch midsummer’s bonfire and try traditional midsummer’s night spells.
Walk nature trails. You can find a list of places near Kuopio from Kuopio's website here.
Pick some forest berries (such as bilberries, raspberries, bog /northern bilberries) and make a pie of the mixed berries you found. You can use the berries also to decorate your own popsicles or ice cubes!
Follow Kuopio International on Instagram to keep up with events happening in Kuopio over the summer.
