Are you passionate about improving student advocacy? Would you like to gain valuable experience for working life and be part of everyday life of The Student Union? Or would you like to gain experience on organising events? Now you have the chance, apply for the Student Union’s Executive Board 2027. The Executive Board is selected at the Student Union Representative Council’s meeting on 26.11.2026.
The Representative Council elects the Board’s Chairperson, Vice Chair and 4-8 members annually. The Board is the executive body of the Student Union and its period of operation is calendar year.
The Board is responsible for the daily activities of the Student Union together with the employees. In addition to the activities of the sectors, the duties of the Executive Board Members are e.g., student advocacy and interest advocacy, representing the Student Union, and being responsible for implementing the action plan.
Applying to the Board does not require previous experience in organisations, more important is your motivation and desire to learn new! You can familiarise yourself about our yearly operations by reading different rules and regulations guiding the activity of the Student Union, which are available in ISYY’s Documents:
Operation of the ISYY Board is mainly focused on weekdays from Monday to Friday during 8am–5pm (prox. 20 hours a week). In recent years, the Board has held approximately 40 board meetings per year (meetings weekly, excluding holidays), and members actively participate in various working groups together with the staff of the Student Union.
There are occasional duties on evening and weekends, especially during the Student Union’s bigger traditional events, e.g. May Day, Academic Year Opening events and City Orienteering, Independence Day Torch Parades and Annual Celebration. Combining board positions at the same time with mandatory attendance courses or full-time work can be challenging, and applicants should be aware of that.
Each member of the Executive Board has a specific area of responsibility and a sector they work with. During 2026 these sectors were:
As a Board Member, you have a chance to influence the activities of the Student Union and also influence the issues at the university and campus cities. During the year, the Board Members have meetings regularly, travel around Finland cooperating with other Student Unions as well as represent the Student Union in different events, meetings and committees.
Remuneration is paid for serving on the Board. During 2025 and 2026 remunerations were paid monthly, being 1000 €/month for the Chairperson, 800 €/month for the Vice Chairperson and 500 €/month for a Board Member. Board Members are expected to actively engage in Board work, so be prepared to be available on office hours and sometimes also on evenings and weekends.
All elected Board Members are encouraged to attend the orientation on 14.–15.12.2026 in Kuopio, so please mark that date on your calendar. The Student Union will cover the travel and accommodation expenses for Board Members from Joensuu. In January there will be an orientation week.
According to ISYY’s rules, the Student Union’s Executive Board is elected by the Representative Council. Persons interested in becoming board members can send their contact information and application to the Student Union so that the Representative Council can evaluate the candidates.
Representative groups negotiate with each other on the election of the Board. Regarding ISYY’s rules every applicant must have a negotiator. Your negotiator can be, e.g. a member of one of the representative groups, or another person who knows you well. Please include the contact details of both yourself and your negotiator in the application.
Send us a free-form application and possible resume as PDF-files via email to viestinta(at)isyy.fi and paasihteeri(at)isyy.fi no later than on 15.11.2026 at 11.59 pm. In your application letter you can briefly tell about yourself, why you are applying for the Executive Board and in which sector you would like to be a part of. Please name your application files clearly, e.g. “First name Surname Application” and “First name Surname CV” and title your email subject as “ISYY Board 2027”.
Both application letters and possible CV will be published on the Student Union’s website on 16.11.2026. By sending an application, you accept that it will be published on the Student Union’s website. Please do not include anything in your application and CV that you do not want to be published, e.g. address or phone number). Applications will be removed from the website on 27.11.2026.
The Representative Council will elect the new Board in their meeting on 26.11.2026. You can also express your willingness to become a Board member in this meeting.
Chairperson of the Representative Council organises a panel discussion for the applicants. Panel discussion is held online in Google Meet on Tuesday 17 November 2026 from 5 pm to 7 pm. Link to panel discussion will be sent via email to the applicants. Panel discussion will be recorded, and it will be available for representatives until the Representative Council has elected the new Executive Board for 2027.
