The Students’ Mental Health Week Wants to Show that Students’ Minds Matter

The Students’ Mental Health Week 5.–13.4. organised by the Bridges project promotes the University of Eastern Finland students’ mental health and wellbeing through events and raising awareness. The week is a part of the nationwide Students’ Mental Health Day campaign.

The joint Bridges project of the University of Eastern Finland and the Student Union ISYY organises in connection with the Students’ Mental Health Day on 13.4. activities that promote wellbeing and communality on both campuses during 5.–13.4. The activities include among other things a trip to Ukko-Koli, a guided introduction to wall climbing, a guided museum tour and other low-threshold events. The week ends on the Tuutko mukaan? (‘Want to come along?’) day on 13.4. that aims at preventing students’ loneliness and is organised together with the Red Cross and the Kuopio Crisis Centre.

– The week is our way of showing that students’ minds matter and that we care about how students are doing. Participation for the events is free of charge and they are open to all UEF students, says Riina Pääkkönen, the Co-ordinator for the Bridges Project.

The week is part of the nationwide Students’ Mental Health Day campaign which is organised by the Student Wellbeing Network and coordinated by Nyyti ry. Its aim is to provoke conversations about students’ mental health on 7.–14.4. This year the campaign’s theme is compassion.

Students’ mental health problems have increased in recent years as is shown for example in the new results of the University Student Health Survey (KOTT 2021). Students have also asked that the Bridges project would increase knowledge about wellbeing and mental health. Therefore, it was seen as important to participate in the nationwide campaign.

– Our aim is that the Students’ Mental Health Week will become a new tradition. This way it would be a continuum to ISYY’s Wellbeing Week which is organised every autumn, says Pääkkönen.
