HAPPY TUESDAY!

And Happy New Year 2024! Whether you are a new student who has just arrived in Joensuu or a student returning to campus, reading this first Weekly Feed of the year is a good start for the semester!

The ISYY office is back at your service with normal opening hours - please see more information below. If you are a new student and unsure about how to join ISYY, order your student card or anything else related to your life and studies in Finland, please contact the ISYY team. We are here to help! You can also visit the ISYY office for second-hand kitchen items or sports equipment loans.

ISYY offices are back at your service after the Christmas Holidays and so is Weekly Feed. ISYY offices are open weekly from Monday to Thursday. Exceptions in our opening hours can be seen from ISYY.fi frontpage and we'll inform about them also in Weekly Feed, which will come to your email every Tuesday.

Tell us who should receive a recognition from ISYY? 

You can now suggest a candidate to receive a recognition at the ISYY Annual Celebration this spring! Suggestions must be sent by 28 January.

Every member and alumni of ISYY has the right to suggest a person to receive a Medal of Honor, Golden and Silver Medal of Distinction and Medal of the Student Union. The delivered suggestions will be forwarded to ISYY’s Committee for Recognitions and they will prepare the suggestion for the ISYY Executive Board. The final decision of the acknowledgements will be made by the ISYY Executive Board.

Planning to apply for the ETCS’s from last years positions of trust?

ETCS’s from the last year’s positions of trust in UEF Administration, ISYY or Student Associations can be applied from Monday 29 January 2024 onwards.

The instructions will be published to ISYY websites on 29 January and the ETCS’s can be applied until the end of February 2024. We will inform about the application also in our newsletters.

SYKETTÄ spring season 2024 has started, welcome aboard! 🤸🏽

Free trial period is held until 21.1.2024. Remember to register as a user, so you can enroll on classes and turns via sports calendar on the website.

❗NB! You can’t enroll on classes and turns in the sports calendar via mobile application without a valid SYKETTÄ sticker – if you don’t have a sticker, you have to enroll via the sports calendar on the website!

 
 
     
 
 

Winter cycling competition Kilometrikisa has kicked off! 🚴🏼

❄️ SYKETTÄ is participating in the winter cycling competition Kilometrikisa, which will be held between 1.1.-29.2.2024. All UEF and Karelia UAS staff members and students are welcome to attend SYKETTÄ Joensuu team!

❄️ Kilometrikisa is a light-hearted cycling competition for workplaces, departments, associations, clubs or any other teams. The aim is to encourage bicycle commuting and promote everyday cycling. In Kilometrikisa every team member will record their cycling kilometers and the team with the highest number of kilometers will win.

Winter Classic 2024 outdoor ice match 🏒

UEF and Karelia UAS are facing each other once again in an outdoor ice match at Mehtimäki Finnish Baseball Stadium  (Mehtimäenaukio 2, Joensuu) on Tuesday 16.1.2024. Come watch, experience and cheer your university's team and favourites on with hundreds of other spectators 🏆

The match has free entrance. Please note that tickets via Kide.app are used to estimate the number of spectators and spectators are let in order of arrival. 

 
 
 

Initial Schedule:
16:30 Gates are open
17:15 Teams and referees warm-up
17:50 Ceremonial puck drop
18:00 Game starts
21:00 Event ends

Competition and shows for the spectators before the game and during the breaks. Events official “limited edition” overall patch is on sale at the kiosk and before the event via kide.app. Joensuun Kiekko-Pojat will have kiosks with some snacks at the event. We will also arrange a raffle for the support of Icehearts ry.

 

Winter Classic is arranged by The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland in co-operation with SYKETTÄ Joensuu. Event supporters are the city of Joensuu, University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences, Regional Council of North Karelia and many more!

UEF: Registration to the Doctoral Conferment Ceremony in Joensuu 6.-8.6.2024 is open! 

The Doctoral Conferment Ceremony is a way for the University of Eastern Finland to show its appreciation for persons who have completed a doctoral degree. For doctorate holders, on the other hand, the Ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate their academic achievements.

Registration to this spring’s Ceremony in Joensuu is open until the end of February.

The three-day doctoral conferment festivities involve a number of events where student marshals’ help is indispensable. Serving as a marshal is a task of honour. Applying for the position of student marshal is also open.

UEF: Course Assistant Programme

Are you interested in supporting UEF students learning languages and do you speak one of the following languages as your mother tongue: Chinese, French, German or Spanish?

Now it's time to apply for the Course Assistant Programme! You can apply by filling the application form.

International students can receive 1-4 ECTS credits for their work as an assistant and they will get a Certificate of Completion. The amount of credits depends on the time one can invest in the programme.

Starting 16 January 2024 the Student and Learning Services’ regular opening hours are changing.

  • 2–15 January 2024 the phone service and customer service desk in both Joensuu and Kuopio are open Mon–Fri from 10 am to 3 pm
  • Starting 16th January:
    Customer service desk: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm 

    Phone service: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm

Career planning and job seeking courses for the spring 2024!

Where will I find work? How will I be convincing in the job interview? What can I do with my degree? What are my strengths? Am I in the right field? What should I study as a minor subject? What rights and obligations do I have as an employee?

Students pondering about their future directions or seeking traineeships and employment are troubled by many questions. Nevertheless, don’t worry! Practical guidance, knowledge and support is there for you on the career planning and job seeking courses offered by UEF Career Services. 

The first career planning and job seeking courses begin on 8th January 2024! Find the course details in Peppi.

 

The courses for the academic year 2023–2024 include the following courses in English and Finnish:

  • Career planning – self-study course, 1 ECTS
  • Career planning – practical exercises, 1 ECTS
  • Job seeking – self-study course, 1 ECTS
  • Job seeking – practical exercises, 1 ECTS
  • Basics of Finnish working life – self-study course, 1 ECTS (only in English)

The courses offered by the UEF Career Services are meant for all students to support and help them during studies and when the move towards working life becomes timely. The courses offer you knowledge, skills, courage and attitude for the future working life. In these courses, you can also clarify your thoughts about your future and career possibilities.

The application period for UEF Trainee 2024 Positions closes on Friday 12th January

UEF Trainee Programme provides paid internship placements to international degree students of UEF. In the programme, international degree students have a chance to work at UEF research groups or services, or at placements provided by collaborators for two months (or four months half time).

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
