Chances to get involved in the Student Union decision-making in autumn!

ISYY's autumn semester will be full of possibilities to get involved in the student activities and decision-making in Student Union and UEF. That is because in autumn will be held ISYY's Representative Council Elections and also we will be having a mass call for the positions of Student Representatives in UEF decision-making bodies. Also in autumn, it is possible to apply for becoming a member of the ISYY Executive Board and also many of our clubs will have their board selected in the autumn semester.

About the Representative Council Elections

Are You Interested in Student Advocacy and Politics? Do not miss a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to make a difference and get involved in the Representative Council Elections! ISYY's Representative Council Elections of ISYY are held in autumn 2023 in both Joensuu and Kuopio. Every member of ISYY may run for and vote in the elections.

The Representative Council Elections is when the highest decision-making body of the Student Union is elected. The aim of the Representative Council is to serve the members of ISYY and make sure that the student perspective is always taken into account in decision-making. The Representative Council members have an opportunity to influence many things that directly affect students, such as the level of the membership fee, as well as the annual Budget and Action Plan of the Student Union.

By presenting yourself as a candidate and voting, you have an opportunity to have your say on how things should be run and how the life of UEF students could be improved. Being a member of the Representative Council is meaningful work that has far-reaching impacts both locally and nationally. As a bonus you will meet new people, gain valuable experience and obtain many transferrable skills that will boost your employability.

Positions of Student Representatives in UEFdecision-making bodies

Student Representatives in the UEF administration, called Hallopeds in Finnish, are students who participate in decision-making within the different bodies of the University. Hallopeds are full members of the decision-making bodies and their purpose is to represent students, look after their interests and make sure that the student perspective is always taken into account in UEF decision-making. Hallopeds have an important role in ensuring a good flow of communication between students and the UEF administration, departments and faculties.

The term of most of the positions is 2024-2025 and the position calls will be published in the beginning of autumn semester.

UEF offers its students and staff opportunities for campus farming during the summer

Both campuses have places, cultivation boxes and planting soil available. In Joensuu there are cultivation boxes on the roof of the Metria building. You can cultivate together with your co-workers and also the students can participate. There is 1 to 2 boxes reserved for each group of campus farmers.

Those interested in campus farming, please contact Senja Hytinkoski, senja.hytinkoski@uef.fi or Saila Vaittinen, saila.vaittinen@uef.fi, who are the contact persons of university’s Sustainability and Responsibility Group.

You don’t need any official contract for campus farming, but there is some basic rules for all. Every farmer is responsible for purchasing their own seeds and seedlings for farming, taking care and watering of them and looking after possible wastes to the garbage can. Water is available at cultivation places, but you need to bring your own equipments for farming.

Please remember, that the cultivated plants are for their farmers, they are not in common use for all, thank you. This way all who are farming there can enjoy their own harvest.

Welcome to the farming group!

Finnish summer bucket list

Are you spending the summer in Finland? Would you like some ideas for activities?

After the long winter and a few winter comebacks (Finns use the word ‘takatalvi’, see description here) summer is finally approaching fast so we have collected a list of (Finnish) things for you to do in an out of your campus city this summer!

TLDR; Summer in Finland is beautiful yet painfully short, so you’d better enjoy it - here are some ideas how:

  • Play mölkky or try frisbeegolf (ISYY members can loan sports equipment from the office for free):
  • Grill sausages or bake tikkupulla on a campfire. Recipe here
  • Swim in a lake to "throw away your winter coat" (heittää talviturkki in Finnish, means to swim in a lake for the first time after winter). You can find a list of beaches in Joensuu here
  • Watch midsummer’s bonfire and try traditional midsummer’s night spells. You can find some spells here and some midsummer information here
  • Visit nature trails. You can find a list of places near Joensuu here or check International-Joensuu ISYY Facebook profile's pictures for more information about nature trails.
    • Finnish nature is beautiful, so let’s keep it that way. Get to know Everyman’s Rights if you visit nature
  • Pick some forest berries (such as bilberries, raspberries, bog bilberries) and make a pie of the mixed berries you found. You can use the berries also to decorate your own popsicles or ice cubes!
  • Check out the selection of ISYY's book exchange shelf at the ISYY office and pick up some free reading for you to enjoy at a summer cottage, in a park or at beach.
  • You can find Joensuu event calendar here for more thing to do around the city during the summer.
  • Already seen EVERYTHING in Joensuu? Why don’t you visit some nearby cities, villages or sights
    • Visit Koli or Tahko if you haven’t already
    • Check out Visit Joensuu website for all North Karelian treasures near Joensuu.
    • Have you visited the other campus city of UEF yet? Kuopio is beautiful during summer and worth a visit! See more here.
    • Ilomantsi (or Pogosta, which means ‘village’ in Karelian language) is beautiful during summer. How many wooden bear statues can you spot?
    • Parikkala patsaspuisto is a sight to see. It’s an outdoor sculpture park with hundreds of eccentric statues made by artist Veijo Rönkkönen. Entry fee is 5€ and is used to maintain the park, you can pay it in cash or via Mobilepay.
