Whether you are just beginning your studies or returning to the campus, starting the semester by reading Weekly Feed is a good way to get in to the mood for the student autumn ahead.  The ISYY offices are open as usual on both campuses, so come by if you need to visit the office for any reason, we are here to help you! We are exceptionally open on Fridays during the first 2 weeks (5 September & 12 September, 10-14).

• If you want to quickly check all the necessary steps for starting your studies at UEF, see the checklist for new students.
• UEF's Information Market is on Wednesday  3 September in Carelia building's lobby, 12pm - 3pm.
• Participate in ISYY's academic year's kick-off events StudentBlast and City orienteering on Thursday 4 September!
• As an ISYY member, you can dowload Frank or Slice's digital student card for free. You can find instructions on ISYY's website. Otherwise, you can use e.g. Tuudo.

The start of the autumn semester is often hectic, so remember to focus on balancing your studies and free time in a healthy manner! Hope you all have a wonderful semester ahead!

Join ISYY’s Language Café activities!

Do you want to learn a new language, brush up on your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you via ISYY’s Language Cafés!

When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by attending (1 ECTS) and/or organising a Language Café (2 ECTS) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

JEIS - ISYY's international club

JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students is the international club of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). JEIS is for anyone and everyone who lives in Joensuu and likes to hang out with people from around the world - both Finnish and international students are all very welcome to join us! If you are a member of ISYY, you are automatically also a member of JEIS.

The most important task of JEIS is to introduce Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and to give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences in Joensuu by arranging diverse events and activities.

How do I join JEIS? 

All ISYY members are automatically members of JEIS and very welcome to all of our events! You can prove your JEIS and ISYY membership with a student card (Frank App or Slice). 

If you would like to help out with planning and creating the events, you can either sign up as an active member and help out whenever you can, or become a board member to have a little more responsibility.

 If you would like to apply for the board or sign up as an active member, you can come to JEIS General Meeting tomorrow, on 16th September at 4 pm at Aurora, in class AU102!

Play ISYY's Freshman Bingo and get a free overall patch!

ISYY's Freshman Bingo kick-starts the academic year for our new students. By completing at least one bingo row, you'll get an ISYY FUKSI overall patch and you can take part in the Freshman Bingo Raffle. There is a limited amount of overall patches on both campuses, so it is a good idea to take this chance quickly! You can save the bingo sheet to yourself electronically from ISYY website or you can collect a printed bingo sheet from ISYY office. The Freshman Bingo must be completed by 30 October 2025 at 3 pm!

ISYY offices have extended opening hours in September

ISYY offices have extended opening hours until 12 September. ISYY offices are open:

1 September - 12 September:

• Mon, Tue, Thu 10-15, Wed 12-16
• Friday 5 September at 10-14
• Friday 12 September at 10-14

15 September onwards ISYY office will return to the regular opening hours:

• Mon, Tue, Thu 10-12 and 13-15
• Wednesday 12-16
• Friday: closed

City Orienteering

Right after the Student Blast starts ISYY’s City Orienteering which is organised especially for the new students. Teams will go around the campus city and complete fun tasks at the orienteering points. The students will get to know each other as well as the campus city. You will meet e.g. student associations and ISYY clubs at the orienteering points!

ISYY's breakfasts will start in September 2025

ISYY’s breakfasts are relaxed and communal events open to all UEF students. Enjoy a nutritious start to your day and meet fellow students! Breakfasts are held monthly on both campuses with two seatings (Kuopio: Snellmania, Joensuu: Aura).

Tour de Itä-Suomi will be cycled again in Joensuu!

Registration for the event is online via Kide.app.

Tour de Itä-Suomi is a cycling event organised by ISYY. The event will be held in Joensuu on Sunday 7 September. There are two route options, the longer route is approx 125 km and the shorter one approx 50 km.

Tour de Itä-Suomi is not a competition - no need to rush, just finish the route at your own safe pace! Bring your own bicycle, bicycle helmet and sunny attitude.

SYKETTÄ Appro

Complete sports events and get to know SYKETTÄ sports services!

SYKETTÄ Appro is held in the beginning of the autumn semester as part of the free trial period 1.-14.9.2025. The idea is to collect markings on an appro pass by participating in sports events in SYKETTÄ sports calendar. Each sports event is rewarded with one marking. Participants who return their appro pass will be rewarded with an overall badge based on the number of markings. We will also have extra classes!

Free trial period

At the start of the semesters, you have a chance to try out SYKETTÄ sports services without a valid SYKETTÄ membership. This autumn, the free trial period is held 1.-14.9.2025.

During the free trial period, you can participate in the events available on the sports calendar without a valid membership. However, users must enroll on each class beforehand. New users must register before they can use the services.

The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2025–2026

The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2025–2026 will be held on Joensuu campus on Thursday, 4 September 2025, at 1.15 p.m. in the Carelia Hall, Carelia building. Welcome! The Opening Ceremony can also be followed online starting at 1.15 p.m.

Ecumenical Opening Service of the Academic Year at the University of Eastern Finland wil be held in the Carelia Hall at 12.15–12.45 p.m.

The Great Overalls Badge Hunt of the UEF Library

The Great Overalls Badge Hunt of the UEF Library is back! This year the badges will be hunted at the campus libraries from 8 to 12 September 2025.

What should a new student know about FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service)? How can you contact FSHS and which matters can students take care of through FSHS's online service?

FSHS recommends that new students visit its page for new students. There are useful instructions and tips, with texts, links and videos.

The Language Centre offers a new minor subject in Finnish as a Second Language!

Want to learn more about the Finnish language and culture? The main focus is on language use situations related to the student's everyday life and in contemporary Finnish society. The minor subject module is suitable for both beginners and those who have already studied some Finnish.

The minor subject consists of language studies and thematic studies. The minor is 25 credits. The minor subject consists of courses offered by the Language Centre and other departments. See the structure and studies in Peppi: Study Guide.

There is no need to apply for the right to study in the minor subject and there is no limit to the number of participants, but the student must register for the minor subject module.

Joensuu Campus - Library 24/7 Door Instructions

During the summer, an early door button has been installed on the door to improve accessibility, and at the same time, the locations of the access token readers have changed slightly. You can also find the same instructions 24/7 at the door, both inside and outside. Every user of the 24/7 space must have the access token read in the reader before entering.

We ask that you only use the door early button when you need unobstructed access to or from the space.

September exchange application period!

There is still time to apply for student exchange for the spring semester 2026 in September! The application period is open 1-15 Sept, the application period closes on 15 Sept at 3:00 PM (Finnish time).

Available in this application period are YUFE Alliance exchanges (Open YUFE and YUFE Minor exchanges), Erasmus+ host universities and bilateral host universities.

Interested in singing?

The representative choir of the University of Eastern Finland, Joy, will organize an audition on September 15th between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., in the classroom AT100!

If you've ever dreamed of singing in a choir, we now offer a great opportunity to audition! You do not need previous singing experience to participate.
