HAPPY TUESDAY!

Meeting new people is a great way to start the semester - you can start for example by joining JEIS Get to Know Each Other Party tomorrow in Bepop! Another great way to make new acquaintances in your field of study is to find our your own Student Association. You can find more information about both in this newsletter.

Finnish Presidental Elections 28 January

The actual Election Day of the Finnish Presidential Elections is Sunday 28 January. To have a right to vote, you must be a citizen of Finland, who has reached the age of 18. Advance Polling stations are open today Tusday 23 January for the last day and the last chance to vote is on Sunday 28 January. Please note, that on Sunday you must vote in the polling station named for you in the letter sent by the Finnish Digital and Popilation Data Service Agency (DVV). 

Polling Station in Carelia is open today 23 January until 6 pm.

You can see the opening hours of each polling station and also check the polling station named for you for Sunday from the Polling Station Service by typing your home address to the search field.

JEIS - ISYY's international club

JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students is the international club of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). JEIS is for anyone and everyone who lives in Joensuu and likes to hang out with people from around the world - both Finnish and international students are very welcome to join us! If you are a member of ISYY, you are automatically also a member of JEIS. 

The most important task of JEIS is to introduce Finnish culture and lifestyle to international students and to give Finnish students an opportunity to gain international experiences in Joensuu by arranging diverse events and activities.

We believe in fun, friendship and unity in diversity!

How do I join JEIS? 

All ISYY members are automatically members of JEIS and very welcome to our events! You can prove your JEIS and ISYY membership with a student card (Frank App). 

If you would like to help out with planning and creating the events, you can either sign up as an active member and help out whenever you can, or become a board member to have a little more responsibility. If you would like to apply for the board or sign up as an active member, you can come to JEIS General Meeting on 30 January! Read more from the Upcoming Events - section in this newsletter. 

 
 
     
 

 
     
 
 

Sports afternoon on 13.2.2024

Sports afternoon of spring 2024 will be held on Tuesday 13.2.2024. The UEF and Karelia UAS hold a sports afternoon together and by the decision of the university rectors, the sports afternoon is lecture-free from 12:15pm. On sports afternoon, a wide variety of different exercise options are available for students and staff members. SYKETTÄ sticker is not required to participate in sports afternoon.

All classes and turns in SYKETTÄ sports calendar on 13.2. are also included in sports afternoon programme. To participate in classes and turns in the sports calendar, you don't have to have a valid SYKETTÄ sticker, but you must be registered as a user and enroll on classes and turns.

The spring 2024 sports afternoon schedule is now published and you will find it on SYKETTÄ website, via the link below! The schedule is still being updated after the publication and changes to the schedule may be possible. Enrollment times are event-specific.

Free trial period has ended - don’t forget to purchase a SYKETTÄ sticker!

All users must have a valid SYKETTÄ sticker from 22.1. on when using the services. You can buy the sticker on our online shop or via the mobile application (Finnish bank account is required). Download the SYKETTÄ mobile application to use the mobile sticker.

The sticker can also be purchased from ISYY and POKA offices where you can pick up physical sports sticker attached to a student card, staff card, or a separate blanco card

You can use the mobile sticker instead of or alongside a physical sticker

Mobile application and blanco card users must be prepared to prove their identity with a student card or an identity card

Always keep your sports sticker with you when using the services and be prepared to present your sticker when requested!

New SYKETTÄ Joensuu staff: Matias

Hi! My name is Matias  I am a third-year physiotherapy student and I started a two-month internship at SYKETTÄ! In addition to teaching shuffle dance on Mondays, I am involved in various projects at SYKETTÄ and I can be contacted regarding gym matters.

If you are interested in starting gym training for the first time or after a long break, but you are confused by the equipment, techniques or putting together a gym program, you can contact me and book a personal gym coaching appointment.

The instructions take place at SYKETTÄ's own gym Portti54. The guidance is free of charge and does not require a SYKETTÄ sticker.

Student Tutors Needed for Next Autumn Semester!

Would You Like to Be a Student Tutor?

If you study in a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree programme at UEF and you are interested in
helping the new students, you can apply as a student tutor.

The student tutor helps the new students to have a smooth start for their studies. All the new
students have a student tutor. And each tutor has a group of tutees.

Tutoring offers many opportunities to learn, for example to develop your communication and
coordinating skills.

The tutors will be trained for the job, and they will receive credits and a certificate on tutoring.

The application period will be 23 Jan – 4 Feb 2024.

On Friday 26 January 2024 and Monday 29 January 2024 the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk in Joensuu is closed.

The phone service as well as the customer service desk in Kuopio are open normally. You can also contact the customer service by email.

What is my Student Association? 

Student Associations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Associations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you! 

Each Student Association has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.

JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students welcomes you to our Get to Know Each Other Party which - as the name suggests - is the perfect way to have a great time and make new friends! We will have the whole of Bepop for ourselves on Wednesday 24th January  between 7 pm and 10 pm. The Get to Know Each Other -Bingo starts at 7.30 pm, after which there will also be a chance to take part in karaoke, and we will be having a DJ. The fun times continue through the night even after the place opens to the public.

JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students General Meeting (30.1)

Please note: JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students is the new name of ESN Joensuu. The name change will be officially voted for in this General Meeting. 

ISYY's international club JEIS - Joensuu's Exchange and International Students is looking for new board members and active members for the spring semester 2024! So if you would like to apply, help by voting to elect the new board and also know a bit more about our beloved  international club (while eating snacks), you are more than welcome to join us in the General Meeting on Tuesday 30.1.2024 at 5pm in room M103 (Metria building on campus, Yliopistokatu 7)

JEIS is made up of the board, the active members and the regular members.
We are all equally as important, but it is the board that makes the big decisions and together with the active members gets the ball rolling to make student life fun for everyone!

 

 
 
 

Open board positions

  • President is the glue keeping our lovely club going - they are responsible for example calling all meetings, preparing agendas and making sure everything runs smoothly. As a President of an ISYY club, ISYY membership is required to apply for this position.
  • Vice President acts as the left hand of the President and as the contact person for ESN Finland. Vice President can for example run meetings if a President is not able to attend. ISYY membership is required to apply for this position.
  • Treasurer & Trip Coordinator & Secretary handles all monetary issues and keeps contact with Timetravels
  • 1-2 Communication Managers are responsible for all marketing and communication, especially in social media
  • 1-2 Event Managers coordinate, plan and execute all events
  • Photographer and Graphic Designer take photos and design the visuals for marketing events
 

How can I apply? 

The elected board will be active for the spring semester 2024. We will train all of our new board members, so there's no need to worry if you don't know everything!

If you would like to apply for one or more positions in the board, please prepare a ONE MINUTE SPEECH telling about yourself and why you should be chosen for the role. If you are not able to participate and would still like to run for the position, you can send a one minute long video to us where you tell us why you should be elected at esnjoensuu@esnfinland.eu.

Psst..! If board member duties are not for you but you'd like to help with organising events, you can also apply to join as an active member in the General Meeting.

Remember to take your ESNCard or student card (Frank) with you if you want to vote or apply to become a board member of JEIS!

AEGEE-Joensuu's Local Agora (aka General Meeting) will take place on Thursday 25.01 at 17.00 in AU206 (Aurora building). Come along to learn about our activities - and this is your chance to join our board too!

AEGEE-Joensuu is the only non-partisan political student association at UEF. If you're interested in advocacy, cultural exchange, or strengthening your CV, join us!

AEGEE-Joensuu Think Drink - Reproductive rights, genetic testing, and ethics: where do we draw the line? (29.1)

Our monthly event is back! Every last Monday of the month we meet in Bar Play to discuss a political or social topic. Come along to January's Think Drink to discuss the development of genetic testing and its ethical boundaries when it comes to reproductive rights - no AEGEE membership or registration is necessary!

Please note that we aim to create an open and respectful space for discussion, all participants must respect our principles for a safer space throughout the event.

Information about Weekly Feed

This is an issue of Weekly Feed at Joensuu campus. Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Joensuu campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself. 

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.

Weekly Feed is published on Tuesdays during the academic year, with the exception of holidays and a few other days. If you do not want to receive the newsletter anymore, you can unsubscribe the letter via the link (Click here to unsubscribe) located on the bottom of the letter.
