HAPPY TUESDAY!

Have you already seen black ice? The roads can be super slippery even though the ice there is not really visible. The name black ice comes from this thin coating of ice on the roads when you can see the asphalt through the ice.

Slipping is the most common accident for pedestrians in winter. Please wear proper footwear!

Enjoy your week!

Kind regards,

General Assembly of SYL 17.-18.11.

Highest decision-making body of the National Union of the University Students in Finland (SYL) is the General Assembly. It meets once a year in November. SYL members – student unions – elect each one’s own delegation to decide on the union’s economy in the coming year as well as to elect the board for next year.

How many members of the delegation and how many votes it has depends on how many members the student union has. ISYY has 15 votes in the GA.

The General Assembly will be held at Tampere University on 17–18 November. The GA is typically streamed to SYL's YouTube-channel @sylvideot.

Intensive course of historical dances

When: Fridays 27.10. - 17.11.2023 at
18.00 - 20.00

Where: in the pedagogical hall of Mehtimäkihalli (Kisapolku 1), Joensuu

Welcome to learn historical European ballroom dances and historically inspired dances. The dances are beginner-friendly social group dances. Everyone is welcome to join as they are and regardless of previous dance experience.

For the workshop you need: a water bottle, comfortable training clothes, dance/sport shoes or socks. There is a light wooden floor in Mehtimäkihalli, so black-soled shoes are prohibited.

You don't need your own partner of dance experience for the workshops. The instructions are in both English and Finnish. Teaching methods are gender-neutral. Once a week we go through four dances. You may join one session or all four of them.

Historical dances are social court dances from the European Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Empire eras. The information about them is based on the notebooks of dance masters, and they have been reconstructed from historical sources, including the music. Nowadays, new dances based on historical choreographies and modern music are also created.

Registration via the SYKETTÄ calendar

Course participants are welcome to the Academic History Ball of the University of Eastern Finland on Saturday 18 November 2023 in the ballroom of Art Museum Onni. All the dances of the course are danced at the ball. Click here for more information about the Autumn Ball and for contact information.

FSHS - Ability to Study

Ability to study means a student’s ability to work, and it’s a combination of several interconnected factors. Personal resources, study skills, teaching and counselling, and a supportive study environment all have significant impacts on how well a student performs. Strengths in one or more areas may help to maintain a student’s ability to study even when there are problems in other areas.

Study progress can be improved by addressing all the different aspects of ability to study. This is the responsibility of all parties in the study community, including student healthcare, the university and student organisations – and the students themselves!

The model for ability to study shown above can promote cooperation between different parties and at the same time support and help students progress through their studies. It can also help students to understand the different aspects of their ability to study.

Check out the details of the Ability to Study -model from the FSHS website:

Participate in the survey:  Online exams and remote monitoring

Dear Teacher or Student, please answer the survey, and influence the procurement of proctoring software for online exams!

Do you think it should be possible to monitor remotely conducted online exams more closely? Would there be users for this kind of software in the University of Eastern Finland?
What kind of features should the software have?

The mapping of the procurement of remote monitoring software, aka proctoring software, for online exams continues. Now we are investigating UEF teachers' and students’ opinions and views on the matter: whether there is a need for procurement, how much use the software would have and what kind of features should be found in it.

The survey was created based on the responses to an online exam-related survey conducted earlier in the autumn. This survey is only aimed at the staff and students of the University of Eastern Finland, so that we can get a better idea of what kind of needs and ideas exist in our organization in particular. More information available on the attachment.

Answer the survey no later than 30.11.2023 and influence future exam practices! All responses are anonymous.

Use Turnitin Draft Coach for assistance during the writing phase of your assignment

Turnitin Draft Coach is a tool that helps writers during the writing phase. The Draft Coach service operates within Word Online, and you'll need to log in using your UEF credentials. You can find instructions for enabling Draft Coach in the Turnitin plagiarism detection system course (course key for the course is "turnitin"). With Draft Coach, you can check both the originality of your text and the references within the text and sources. In addition, Draft Coach includes an English language proofreading tool.

Draft Coach provides the familiar originality report found in Turnitin. Draft Coach identifies similarities in the text from extensive databases, such as the internet, student papers, and publications. Draft Coach does not report or archive work anywhere. It is designed to assist students in addressing any potential issues before submitting their assignments. You can use Draft Coach instead of the assignment check in the Student Turnitin course in Moodle.
