HAPPY TUESDAY!

Next Monday 14.2 is Valentine’s Day! Compared to other countries, Finnish Valentine’s Day is usually meant to be spent with friends instead of with a significant other - Valentine’s Day is called ‘ystävänpäivä’ in Finnish, which translates as Friend’s Day. Finns might give a Valentine’s card to their closest friends as a thank you for being a great friend. However, the US version of the day has influenced Valentine’s Day here so some people go on a date and exchange gifts with their partner. It is common for Finnish friends to gather together on Valentine's Day and have, for example, a movie night with snacks or go to a café. You could participate in the BRIDGES events next Monday with your friends if you want to celebrate the day! You can also read more about Valentine's Day in Finland from International Joensuu-Isyy on Facebook.

If you are a new student and unsure about how to join ISYY, order your student card or anything else related to your life and studies in Finland, please contact the ISYY team. We are here to help!

Hope you have a wonderful semester!

Kind regards,

Salla / kv.joensuu@isyy.fi

The first working life themed day is held online on 23 February from 10.15 am to 4 pm so mark this date to your calendar! We will inform everyone in more detail of the first day’s schedule in the near future so follow ISYY’s communication channels!

ISYY: Hybrid Teaching for Increasingly Reachable Education - Putting Lessons Learned from the Pandemic into Good Use

Students in higher education as well as young people in general, have had to carry a substantial burden due to the pandemic response measures against the coronavirus. This is shown through increasing anxiety, cynical attitudes and feelings of loneliness among higher education students. The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY) is pleased to hear of the decision of the University of Eastern Finland to move back to contact teaching starting from 31.1.2022.

Time during the pandemic has resulted in the need to look at studying and teaching methods from an entirely new perspective. ISYY is however worried, that the pedagogical tools and solutions developed during the pandemic will not be incorporated into permanent teaching practices.

The Student Union asserts that the University of Eastern Finland should develop its teaching practices towards increasingly multimodal methods, such as lecture recordings, interactive assignments and group discussions.

What is my Student Organisation?

Student Organisations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Organisations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Each Student Organisation has their own overalls colour, they are listed in ISYY's student calendars! You can watch this Youtube video to learn more about the Finnish higher education overall tradition.
