Are you passionate about learning or teaching languages? Come and hear about ISYY's Language Café activities this Thursday from 9 to 10 am on Google Meet. The idea of the Cafés is that they are informal language classes taught by students for students. You can earn 1 ECTS by being a participant and 2 ECTS as being a leader.

You might have seen students dressed up in different coloured overalls all over campus by now. These students belong to different subject associations and the colour of their overalls represents the association. Find out from the last section of this newsletter to which subject association you could belong!

Give us feedback on ISYY’s City Orienteering and participate in a raffle!

Did you participate ISYY's City Orienteering last week? We’d love to hear your feedback on this year’s City Orienteering so we can make it even better in the future!

You can give us feedback anonymously via Google Forms. The form is open until the end of Sunday 13 September.

We will raffle a total of 10 ISYY product bags (5 bags / campus), each worh 30 €, among respondents. Bag includes a tote bag, three overall patches, two safety reflectors, keychain and something sweet. Contact information for the raffle is sent via different form after finishing giving feedback.

Play ISYY's Freshman Bingo and get a free overall patch!

ISYY's Freshman Bingo kick-starts the academic year for our new students. By completing at least one bingo row, you'll get an ISYY FUKSI overall patch and you can take part in the Freshman Bingo Raffle. There is a limited amount of overall patches on both campuses, so it is a good idea to take this chance quickly!

You can save the bingo sheet to yourself electronically from ISYY website or you can collect a printed bingo sheet from ISYY office. The Freshman Bingo must be completed by 29 October 2026 at 3 pm!

Join ISYY's Language Café activities!

Do you want to learn a new language, brush up on your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you via ISYY’s Language Cafés!

When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by attending (1 ECTS) and/or organising a Language Café (2 ECTS) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

Tour de Itä-Suomi will be cycled in the spirit of brevet!

Tour is a cycling event for students organised by ISYY. This autumn the Tour is held in Kuopio from 7 to 20 September. Choose the best day for you and challenge your friends to ride with you!

The Tour is not a competition - no need to rush, just finish the route at your own safe pace! You only need your own bicycle, bicycle helmet and sunny attitude.

Participation for ISYY members is 5 € and for others 10 €. Registration is online in Kide.app.

Free sports week from September 7–13!

During this week, you can sign up for any classes you want and freely  test our selection at no cost (excluding the Luola gym and trainer services)!

How to participate:

• Register as a user on SYKETTÄ website.
• Explore our range of group fitness and ball games classes for the autumn season.
• Log in and sign up for classes through the reservation calendar. During the free sports week, signing up costs nothing!
• There is no need to enroll for the gym. Gyms are in use during opening hours.

Degree student, remember to pay the FSHS fee!

Please remember to pay the fee for the Finnish Student Health Services for both the autumn and spring semesters to Kela unprompted. The due date for the fee for the autumn term is 15 November, if you register as attending by 30 September. The 2026 rate of the student healthcare fee is EUR 35.35 per term. Always check out Kela's website for more detailed information about the healthcare fee.

UEF students, participate in the 72-hour transport challenge: What will Kuopio be like in 2040?

The 72h Traffic Challenge is a hackathon focusing on urban development and traffic, where solutions to real problems are designed. The theme for the 2026 competition is ‘Kuopio in 2040’.

You do not need a background in the field of transport or urban development. All students are welcome to join. The main language of the competition is Finnish, but all materials will also be prepared in English, so international students can also participate in the challenge.

Participate in the 72-hour transport challenge on 2–5 November 2026 and solve a real urban development challenge in a multidisciplinary team. Registration is open until 4 October. The winning team will be rewarded with a excursion to Copenhagen.

• Come and discover a new hobby! There are activities for all ages. At the event, you can try out different activities, collect stamps in your Hobby Passport, and enter a prize draw. The prizes include opportunities to take part in a variety of hobbies and sports!

Celebration of Bells: Handbell Concert, Sat 12.9. at 18

• St. John's Church, Ampujanpolku 2
• Vivo Handbell Ensemble from Kuopio performs on handbells, a rare instrument in Finland with origins in 17th-century England. The program includes classical music, folk music and compositions written specifically for handbells. Free admission.

Would you like to sing in a choir?

UEF Kuopio University Choir is a mixed choir operating at the UEF Kuopio campus. Our singers are composed mainly of current and former students, exchange students, and employees of the University.

During the open rehearsals you can follow along our normal rehearsal, you get to learn about the choir's activities and after the rehearsals give a voice sample of the song of your choice.

ISYY's Movie Club Hyvät Kuvat autumn season begins on 10.9.

ISYY's Movie Club called Hyvät Kuvat will start their autumn season on Thursday 10 September. The club presents 11 movies during the autumn on Thursdays at 5.30 pm at the Cinema Kino Kuvakukko (adress: Vuorikatu 27). Exception in starting times: 8 October act starts at 6 pm.

The Club sells seasonal tickets, which gives you access to all of the autumn 2026 movies. It is not possible to buy individual tickets for each movie. The price for students is 25 € and for others 30 €. The tickets are also sold from the Cinema Kino Kuvakukko (card or cash) before every act.

And if by any chance you happen to be an exchange student and have joined ISYY, we are happy to provide you a free seasonal ticket. Ask more from ISYY office!

Coffee & Friends continues on 15 September!

Coffee & Friends event offers low-threshold hanging out after lectures and the opportunity to meet other students over coffee and a snack. All students of the University of Eastern Finland are welcome to Coffee & Friends. You can come to the café alone or with a friend. In addition, Coffee & Friends has a changing chill programme. Participation in the programme is voluntary and you can come for a while or for the whole time. Participation is free of charge and does not require pre-registration.

Coffee & Friends meets on Tuesdays from 15 September to 24 November at 3-5pm at Lukema (ISYY office in the Studentia building).

This autumn's programme will be updated on ISYY's website as the planning progresses.

Poikkitieteellinen syyskymppi

Poikkitieteellinen Syyskymppi is a fun and welcoming running event for all students, where the main goal is to enjoy being active together. The event takes place on Friday, September 18, 2026.

Choose the distance that suits you best: Would you like to challenge yourself and compete against other runners? Join the 10 km competitive race. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, you can take part in the 5 km or 10 km non-competitive category, either by running, jogging, or walking. Everyone is welcome!

The event begins with registration at 4:15 PM, and the races start at 5:00 PM (competitive race) and 5:15 PM (non-competitive category).

Ticket sales open on KideApp on Wednesday, September 9 at 2:00 PM. The entry fee is €4.

Welcome to the Researchers' Night on campuses on 25 September 2026!

Researchers' Night, a science event for the whole family, invites visitors to make discoveries, experiment and explore fascinating scientific phenomena at the University of Eastern Finland's Joensuu and Kuopio campuses on Friday, 25 September 2026, from 16.00 to 20.00. In Kuopio, the main venue for the science event is the Snellmania building, with additional locations across the campus area.

Free of charge, the event offers a rich programme and inspiring experiences for people of all ages on both campuses, including science workshops, laboratory tours, research presentations and short science sessions. Please note that changes to the programme are possible.
