HAPPY TUESDAY!

As you might know already, ISYY has ice skates that you can borrow for free if you are our member. You can come and get yourself a pair during our office's opening hours. If you are looking for a skating rink, you can find a list of all the available skating rings in Kuopio from HERE. If you click the name of the skating rink, a map will open showing where the rink is.

You can also skate for free on the Lake Kallavesi. Kallavesi ice skating track starts from Kuopio Passenger Harbor, near the city center. You can rent ice skates from the harbour. Read more info about the Kallavesi track HERE.

What is BRIDGES?

The University of Eastern Finland has received a special grant from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the years 2021-2022 to promote well-being of students and prevent exclusion. The project has several subcontractors, one of which is ISYY. The aim of the BRIDGES project is to reduce the experience of loneliness and to prevent exclusion through activities that increase students' community and well-being.

The Hobby Buddy service matches students together

During the Autumn 2021, 102 students registered for the ISYY's Hobby Buddy service and we suggested at least one hobby buddy to almost all of those who registered!

At the end of the autumn, feedback was collected from students who had registered to the Hobby Buddy service. Respondents praised the existence of the service, the ease of it and the fact that through the service you can really find a company for your hobbies. SYKETTÄ news

Look here for offers with your SYKETTÄ sticker.

One-month sticker

The sticker is for you, if you only stay in the city for a little while or don’t want to commit to the whole season. The price of the one-month sticker is 15 euros and it includes all the SYKETTÄ services, eg. group classes, gyms, ball sports and ice hockey. Read more.

GYM services

  • SYKETTÄ has two gyms at University campus: Studentia (Yliopistonranta 3) and Snellmania (Yliopistonranta 1). These halls and gyms are open for your use with a valid SYKETTÄ sticker. Please check the page of each gym to learn about the opening hours, equipment and other important stuff: Studentia and Snellmania
  • Gym shifts in our partners’ gym
    • You can book a gym shift for KuoFit (on Wednesdays) or Kunnonsali (on Sundays), if you have a valid SYKETTÄ sticker.
    • Additional service: City of Kuopio gym card for Rajala and Kotkankallio. Read more here.

    •     Saturdays and Sundays 9-21
  • Beginning of February at Thursdays:

UEF's recommendation on online teaching ends on 31 Jan 2022

UEF’s recommendation on online teaching will end at the end of January. On-campus teaching will be resumed gradually, while taking pedagogical viewpoints and restrictions on public gatherings into consideration. The number of people attending lectures, exams and public examinations of doctoral dissertations is limited to 20 people at a time until 14 February. The university’s facilities, including the library and Exam facilities, are open normally.

The university’s current recommendation on remote work will end on 15 February 2022, in accordance with the recommendation of the Finnish Government.

Any possible restrictions on public gatherings imposed by the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland will have to be taken into consideration in the university’s activities also in the future.

UEF campus development webinar on 1 Feb 2022 at 13–14

Welcome to a webinar focusing on the future development of the university’s campuses, to be held on 1 February 2022, starting at 13.00. The University of Eastern Finland has launched a scenario project on campus development, which will create alternative visions of the operating environment all the way to 2035. The first campus development webinar presents the objectives and schedule of UEF’s campus development, and creates visions from the perspectives of future work, teaching, research, and facility solutions.

The webinar will be hosted by Rector Jukka Mönkkönen, Academic Rector Tapio Määttä, Director of Administration Tuomo Meriläinen and Head of Facilities Management Tarja Harjula. The webinar recording will be published in Yammer after the event.

A Yammer group dedicated to UEF’s campus development (UEF Kampuskehitys/ UEF campus development) will be opened at the end of January. It will serve as a platform for comments during the webinar, and as an interactive channel for internal communication relating to campus development later on.

Remember to pay the healthcare fee by 31.1.

Degree students in universities must pay a Finnish Student Health Service's  (FSHS, Finnish abbreviation YTHS) healthcare fee to Kela. For the spring semester 2022, the healthcare fee is 35,80€ and the last payment date is 31.1. You must pay the student healthcare fee for each term. Kela will not send you a bill for the fee, so you must make sure to pay it on your own initiative. You can pay the healthcare fee in OmaKela (with Finnish bank account)

FSHS HealthStart questionnaire

Hey, you have perhaps already noticed on our website that the health questionnaire for first-year students has been updated. The questionnaire's new name is the HealthStart. Degree students can fill in the HealthStart questionnaire on the Self online service and they receive immediate feedback on their state of health. If necessary, students will be referred for health services that promote health provided by the FSHS.

First-year students will be sent a personal invitation to fill the HealthStart questionnaire if they have updated their contact information in Self online service. Those who started their studies in autumn 2021, will get a SMS message in January. Those who started their studies at the beginning of 2022 will be invited in February.

  • Nyyti's chats in English live on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Participation in the chats is free of charge and anonymous. They also do not require prior registration.
  • Would you like to chat, but there are terrible queues everywhere? mielenTEKoja-chat is open on Thursdays from 5 pm to 7 pm and ready to ponder with you any stumbling blocks or everyday problems in student life. The chat works on a drop-in basis. It is completely free, and the conversations take place anonymously and confidentially.

ESN KISA's General Meeting 2.2.2022 at 6 pm

If you're interested in becoming a Board member of ESN KISA, attend the General Meeting online on Wednesday 2nd of February at 6pm. You can find the link to the meeting from ESN KISA's social media.

ESN KISA (Kuopio International Students’ Association) operates under the Student Union (ISYY) and it organises recreational activities for international and Finnish students. These activities include excursions, parties, game nights, cultural exchange and other events. (Events of this semester depend on the regional restrictions and the situation of the pandemic.) The goal is to make students' time in Kuopio as fun and memorable as possible. Anyone can join ESN KISA, and membership is free for all Student Union members.

This virtually arranged event is designed for both Savonia’s and UEF’s foreign degree students who want to get hired by local growth and internationally oriented companies as well as for local companies interested in recruiting international workforce.

During the event the students have an opportunity to learn from the companies how to brand themselves and get noticed by the companies. The companies have also the opportunity to learn from each other how to get in contact with international students and what opportunities international students will bring to the companies. The companies will pitch their career and internship openings suitable for English-speaking international students during the event. The companies and students also have an opportunity for discussions and questions.

Student organisations at UEF

Student Organisations are independent, subject-specific associations. Student Organisations gather together students who study the same subject, which allows for them to get to know their peers and work together in the field of student advocacy. It's a great way to meet new people and attend a variety of activities and events with people studying the same subject as you!

Dentina ry came back to life in October 2010 as dentistry studies re-started in Kuopio, and a new generation of students arrived. Dentina attends to its members’ interests, organises all kinds of fun activities and brings dentistry students together to strengthen collegiality. Fortis ry is the student organisation of pharmacy students in UEF, Kuopio campus. You’ll recognise us from our dark green overalls. In addition to taking all our students’ interests into account while making decisions concerning studies, Fortis offers a chance for our international students to get to know their Finnish peers in different events such as sitsit, sports events, parties and hangout events. Hyeena ry is the student organisation for the students of environmental science and applied physics in University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio campus. For its members Hyeena ry arranges events like sitsit, parties, excursions, hangout-evenings and sport events. Kulti ry is the student organisation of biomedicine students in UEF who carry red overalls with white pockets. We advocate the interests of our students, e.g. in matters concerning studies. KuoLO ry is a student organisation for medical students in Kuopio. You can recognise med students from black overalls and good atmosphere! In addition to supervising and promoting the interests of students we arrange many different kinds of events from which the toga party is the most traditional one. Retikka ry is the student organisation of nutrition students in the University of Eastern Finland. Association looks after the interests of its members and offers leisure activities for them as well. In autumn nutrition students traditionally have events like “baptising” event for the freshmen students as well as pre-Christmas party. In spring you can find nutrition students with their bright green overalls for example selling delicious brownies at the University. Nutrition students are famous for their food (and appetite) at their parties – both are almost endless.

Kompassi is an international meeting point situated in the city center. It is a part Settlement Puijola ry of Kuopio.

Kompassi organizes multicultural activities all through the year with the help of our visitors and partners.  Kompassi promotes building of an equal society and offers activities supporting integration and participation, and advice and guidance in everyday life.

Kompassi’s activities emphasize community, peer-support, utilizing people’s own resources and supporting them in moving forward in life. Finns and immigrants confluence through volunteer work.

Weekly Feed is the English language newsletter of the Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland (ISYY). You are receiving this letter on your email because you are a member of ISYY and are studying at Kuopio campus or because you have joined the mailing list yourself.

Weekly Feed provides you with current information on matters related to the Student Union, UEF or other organisations close to students, such as FSHS. In addition, the newsletter provides you with information on events taking place at campus or the campus city.
