This week we will be having the ISYY Annual Celebration week in Kuopio!

During the week we will have a Knitting and Hang around -evening on Wednesday 26th, Megazone lasertag on Thursday 27th and a KYY exhibition on Wednesday and Thursday during the ISYY Office opening hours.

Do you already have the Student Union Ribbon? You can purchase one from ISYY offices. The Studen Union Ribbon is a symbol that shows to which Student Union you belong. The Ribbons of the Student Union and Student Organisations are traditionally worn in the Annual Celebrations. Every ISYY member has a right to wear our Student Union Ribbon.

But let's go through the basics! What is ISYY Board? 

  • The role of the Executive Board is to work in the field of student advocacy both on a local and national level.

  • Each member of the Executive Board has a specific area of responsibility in order to guarantee that every student, despite their background or interests, gets their voice heard in decision-making process.

 
 
 
  • The Board members are UEF students, ISYY members, and the board consists both of the students of Joensuu and Kuopio campuses.
  • The ISYY Executive Board is elected annually by the Representative Council. The Board’s term of office runs from January to December.

  • Remuneration is paid for serving on the Board and the members are expected to actively engage in Board work.

Call: Student Representative for the FSHS Eastern Region Board

The student union of the University of Eastern Finland is looking for one (1) student representative for the board of the eastern region of FSHS for the term of office 1 January 2023 – 31 December 2024.

Finnish Student Health Foundation operates as a provider of student health care services in accordance with the Law on Student Health Care (659/2019). The purpose of the foundation, according to its rules, is "to take care of the health care of students at universities and colleges, as well as to support and promote scientific research that serves this purpose in one way or another."

ISYYs Sustainable Development Week

ISYY is taking part in the Sustainable Development Week, co-organised with the National Union of Univeristy Students in Finland (SYL), from 7th to 13th November (week 45).

In the program there will be a workshop held by Eetti ry about corporate responsibility (in Finnish) and online discussion (in English) held by Fairtrade together with students from The Student Union of the University of Åbo (ÅAS).

On top of the events organised together with SYL, ISYY’s BRIDGES project will arrange a trip to School for Self Suffeciency in Nurmes. In the academy they hold courses to teach people how to live life completely in a self-sustaining way! During the trip you will learn how the academy operates and how you can live more self-sustaining by yourself. You can attend this trip from both campuses.

Join in the Hobby Buddy service!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. You can read about the searched hobbies from ISYY’s websites and fill out the application.

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week.

Thu 3.11. Halloween delicacies in a healthier way -cooking class

Halloween delicacies in a healthier way cooking evening on Thursday 3.11. at 16 pm. During the evening we'll be cooking different sweet and savory dishes with a Halloween theme in a bit healthier way. The evening will be held mostly in Finnish, however instructions and recipes can be translated in English as well. Course will be held by SYKETTÄ nutrition specialist Janica Taskinen. Costs 6€ per person.

Cross-cultural communication course (1 ECT) for International students at the Kuopio campus

How to communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations? Do you want to develop oral English skills and confidence in speaking English?

Join the Cross-cultural communication in professional encounters course (1 ECT) organized by the Language Centre. In this course, there is a special focus on practicing language needed in customer/patient-practitioner interaction and the challenges of a multicultural work environment.

The course will be held 8 Nov–28 Nov at the Kuopio campus. Enrollment in Peppi with code KK00CT44-3001 Oct 28 at the latest. Please check also Language Centre Yammer for more information.

The course is primarily intended for students in international Master’s degree programmes. If there are places, students in international Bachelor degree programmes and exchange students are also welcome. Please note that the course requires presence on Kuopio campus. Feeling confused, exhausted, or anxious? Needing a shoulder to lean on? Student2Student peer counsellors are here to support you in all situations. If you feel you want to talk to someone, anonymously if you wish, Student2Student is the place to go. The trained peer counsellors can help you find further support or the answer to a question on your mind. Discussions are confidential and free of charge.

You can reach Student2Student via telephone (+358 29 445 8580) or via the chat in Kamu. The service is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You can leave a callback request by calling the line anytime, and a peer counsellor will call you when the service is next open.

Pahat Kuvat -movie night by ISYY's movie club Hyvät Kuvat

On Saturday 29th we have some special Halloween tricks and treats. We arrange Pahat Kuvat -movie night and show two classic horror films from the 80s. The movies are Hellraiser and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. One movie is 6 euros and both 8 euros.

The 4th PCU International University Chess Cup

The 4th PCU International University Chess Cup is organized from 25 to 27 November 2022 at the University of Antwerp (BELGIUM). Participation in the PCU International University Chess Cup is free of charge and ensures a free sports and events program for universities and university colleges worldwide. Teams/players book their own accommodation and pay directly to the hotel or hostel of their choice.

The main objective is to offer students a platform where sport is considered as a valuable instrument to develop international interaction and experience, with emphasis on the International Olympic Committee recognized Panathlon values of Fair Play and Universal Friendship.

In addition, for those students unable to travel, on 23 November, an online Blitz Chess Tournament (PCU Chess@Home) will be organized.

Wanna cross a visit to Lapland off your bucket list?

Join ESN Kuopio and ISYY as we are going far beyond the Arctic Circle to experience the real Finnish winter in the northernmost ski resort of Europe in Saariselkä, the place which has ski slopes open sometimes even in June! The trip is organised from Thu 24.11.2022 till Tue 29.11.2022.

Visit the real Santa in the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, take selfies with the reindeers at a farm hosted by Sami people, enjoy the beautiful Arctic landscape and if you are lucky, the mesmerizing Northern lights! There is also a wide range of winter sports you can try – everything from adventurous snowshoeing and skiing to husky sledding, and even swimming in the Arctic Ocean. The group will be accommodated in atmospheric cottages on the slope of the Kaunispää-mountain, which is a perfect place for spotting the Aurora Borealis!

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023.
