HAPPY TUESDAY!

At least in Joensuu we got to enjoy the first snowy days last week. Now with all the snow turned in to slush ("loska", "sohjo" or "hyhmä" in Finnish) we are back to the darkness of November.

Therefore a friendly, yet important, reminder - please remember to attach your reflectors to your outdoor clothing! Find more information in this newsletter under Miscellaneous.

Enjoy your week!

Kind regards,
Jenni

ISYY Elections 8 November - cast your vote!

The eight ISYY Representative Council Elections will be held tomorrow 8 November. You can cast your vote in Tuudo until tomorrow at 18.00. You have a right to vote if you are a member of ISYY and registered as a present student by 24 October.

The easiest way to vote is via Tuudo app. Click to the Representative Council Elections -page from the Tuudo side menu, scroll down the page and click the button "Voting System and Candidate Gallery". It is as easy as that to find the place! If you go to  the page via Tuudo app, you are already signed in with your UEF account. You can also vote with a browser in vaalit.tuudo.fi!

Still thinking who to vote? ISYY has sent an email to everyone last week. The mail contains information about voting and useful links, e.g. to the Election Compass, where you can familiarize yourself with the candidates.

Cast your vote!

Why also you should use your right to vote?

You are paying the ISYY Membership Fee yearly, which has now been 75€ for this academic year. ISYY has in total 14 000+ members in Joensuu and Kuopio. With these elections you are choosing 39 students to represent all of our members in the ISYY Council for the next two years. The ISYY Council decides e.g.:

  • the amount of ISYY Membership Fee
  • how the collected fee is used (ISYY's Budget)
  • what ISYY does (ISYY´s Action Plan)
  • who represents students in UEF administration
  • what are ISYY's values in questions considering student's life (ISYY's Value Paper)
  • additionally the ISYY Council decides e.g. about ISYY's Strategy, Environmental Programme and Equality Plan which works as a base for all of our actions

Use your right to vote and vote a candidate, who you want to be deciding about these things!

Participate in the survey: Online exams and remote monitoring

Dear Teacher or Student, please answer the survey, and influence the procurement of proctoring software for online exams!

Do you think it should be possible to monitor remotely conducted online exams more closely? Would there be users for this kind of software in the University of Eastern Finland?
What kind of features should the software have?

The mapping of the procurement of remote monitoring software, aka proctoring software, for online exams continues. Now we are investigating UEF teachers' and students’ opinions and views on the matter: whether there is a need for procurement, how much use the software would have and what kind of features should be found in it.

The survey was created based on the responses to an online exam-related survey conducted earlier in the autumn. This survey is only aimed at the staff and students of the University of Eastern Finland, so that we can get a better idea of what kind of needs and ideas exist in our organization in particular. More information available on the attachment.

Answer the survey no later than 30.11.2023 and influence future exam practices! All responses are anonymous.

Biodata Sonata

Biodata ~ biographical information
Sonata ~ a type of art music originally known also as a dance

Dance Theatre Minimi's premiere of the autumn is an exploration of dance and physical biodata. The production is realized in collaboration with Sonic Move -project. The work's choreographer is Dance Theatre Minimi's artistic director Mikko Makkonen. The performance utilizes the sonification method, which transforms the dancers' movement into sound, and the corporeality becomes audible. It enables feeling the dance and choreography, hearing and experiencing it aurally, so that dance and the stage accompany one another. The performance is a collision of art and science, in which dance converts into sound and interactional feedback, material and landscape.

Remember your reflector!

According to the law, pedestrians should generally use a reflector in the dark.

A driver driving with low-beam lights will detect a pedestrian without a reflector approximately 50 metres away. With a reflector the pedestrian can be seen as far as 350 metres away. Reflectors improve pedestrian visibility also in lighted areas. Street and advertising lights and the shadows of trees and bushes contribute to a challenging setting. Rain and fog impair the driver’s visibility even more. More information on the website of Finnish Road Safety Council.
