HAPPY TUESDAY!

Next Monday is Valentine’s Day! It has been celebrated in Finland since the 1980’s. Compared to other countries, Finnish Valentine’s Day is usually meant to be spent with friends instead of with a significant other - Valentine’s Day is called ‘ystävänpäivä’ in Finnish, which translates as Friend’s Day. Finns might give a Valentine’s card to their closest friends as a thank you for being a great friend. However, the US version of the day has influenced Valentine’s Day here so some people go on a date and exchange gifts with their partner.

It is common for Finnish friends to gather together on Valentine's Day and have, for example, a movie night with snacks or go to a café. You could participate in the BRIDGES skating event on next Monday with your friends if you want to celebrate the day!

Have a nice week! :)

Kind regards,
Elina

ISYY's statement: Hybrid Teaching for Increasingly Reachable Education - Putting Lessons Learned from the Pandemic into Good Use

Time during the pandemic has resulted in the need to look at studying and teaching methods from an entirely new perspective. ISYY is however worried, that the pedagogical tools and solutions developed during the pandemic will not be incorporated into permanent teaching practices.

The Student Union asserts that the University of Eastern Finland should develop its teaching practices towards increasingly multimodal methods, such as lecture recordings, interactive assignments and group discussions. In addition, contact teaching has a great role as a constructor of community and wellbeing among students, which makes it increasingly important that the university offers learning spaces and room on campus to study or attend teaching activities.

This May Day (vappu in Finnish), students are thirstier for culture more than ever and we are here to provide relief for that thirst!

The May Day includes, among other things, ISYY’s Sawo-Karjala excursion, May Day eve’s happening as well as events by student organisations and ISYY clubs. So let’s leave Zooms and Discords at home this year and let’s go celebrate May Day with the campus cities’ own traditions as well as all over the Savo-Karjala region.
