Freshman Bingo

ISYY organises a ‘fuksibingo’ aka Freshman Bingo to kick-start the academic year for new students.By completing a bingo you will get a unique ISYY Fuksi 2022 overall badge. The Freshman Bingo helps new students to familiarise themselves with student life and to find new communities.

Improve your language skills!

ISYY’s Language Cafés are starting again! Do you want to learn new languages, brush up your old skills and meet new people or teach your native language? We have the perfect opportunity for you!

In a Language Café, your peers and friends are your teachers and at the same time, they can be your students. When participating in Language Café activities, you can also earn ECTS credits by either attending or organising a Language Café (UEF students only) and by submitting a few small assignments to Moodle.

If you are interested in teaching a Language Café, fill in the Google Forms linked here and let us know which languages you would be interested in teaching! You can sign up in Google Forms until Thursday 22nd of September 12 pm (noon).

Leader training is on Thursday 22 September at 4.15pm on Google Meet so see you there! (We will send the link to the leader training via email to those who filled in the Google Forms.) Note that participating in the leader training does not bind you to anything! You can just attend the training and decide after that whether you want to become a leader or not.

This week we are going to kick-start the new academic year!

It is finally the week when we are going to kick-off the new academic year with the traditional Campus Happening and City Orienteering in our both Campuses. On Thursday 8th September the Campus Happening will begin 3.30 pm and during the event the City Orienteering teams will sign up their teams at the registration desk.

The programme of the Campus Happening includes e.g. live music, glitter make ups and different outdoor activities. The event gathers our whole university community together to celebrate the new academic year. You are warmly welcome to join! 

In Kuopio City Orienteering there is still some tickets left for continuing students groups and to the BRIDGES-teams.

If you wish, it is also possible to buy tickets only to the after party from the Albatrossi door when the after party has started.

Please, read the City Orienteering instructions beforehand when coming to the event on Thursday.

ISYY’s club ESN Kuopio is looking for board members

Do you have awesome ideas for free time activities? Become an ESN Kuopio Board Member and make them happen! ESN Kuopio is an international club operating under ISYY and it is also a part of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN).

You do not need to worry about money since ISYY provides all the funding for the club so you can just focus on organising fun activities for fellow students. Additionally, ISYY staff is there to support and help you along the way. Being a Board Member is also a good addition to your CV since it is volunteer work. The club operates in English.

 

 
 
 

The club is looking for at least a president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary, but if you are interested in something else, e.g. communications, there is always room for other positions too. You can also join as an active member which means that you help the board organise events when it suits your schedule and you help as much or little as you want. International as well as Finnish students are warmly welcome! Fill in this Google Forms by 18 September and let us know which position you are interested in!

Need funding for an international project?

ISYY is giving out two grants for student associations, campus organisations and clubs for international activities! The grant is for events and projects organised during autumn semester 2022 that further internationalisation. We prefer to give the grants to projects that focus on long-term goals and promotion of internationalisation among the student body.

The two best applications will receive a grant of 300 €. Application period is from August 18th to September 18th.

Greetings from the Coordinator

Hello dear reader, hopefully the start of the academic year has been peaceful! Last Saturday we were on a day trip in New Valamo with students and we sure had a blast. Psst! The next trip is behind the corner, we are going for a day trip to Tahko mountain. More information about the trip is below. In addition ISYY’s annual Wellbeing Week is celebrated on 3.-7.10. The purpose of the Wellbeing Week is to offer UEF's students and staff activities that promote wellbeing. The program will be published next Monday, so stay tuned! Have a nice week!

Upcoming events

Tue 13.9. is a trip to the Kuhasalo nature trail. The Kuhasalo nature trail is located near the center of Joensuu, about three kilometers from the centrum. In addition there will also be a barbecue.

Thu 15.9. is board game night upstairs at Bar Play. During the evening we play various board games and enjoy Bar Play's tasty french fries. You can also participate in the evening without participating in the games, you can also come hang out.

Thu 22.9. The Joensuu City Theater welcomes students as an audition audience for the audition of the musical My Fair Lady. The show is in Finnish and lasts 2h 40min, including a 20min intermission. There are limited places.

BRIDGES goes bowling

Welcome to BRIDGES' bowling event at Keilakukko bowling hall on Tue 20th of September 5pm-6pm. We have rented 4 tracks and max 6 people to accommodate one track. Your skill level doesn't matter, let's just have a fun time together!

The participation is free, but you need to pay the shoe rent (1 €). You need to have the student card with you. The registration ends on the 13th of September.

Day trip to Tahko mountain

Transportations from Kuopio campus leaves at 11 am. We'll arrive to Tahko at about 12 pm. You can move around Tahko freely or you can go on a tour of Huutavanholma with ISYY’s staff. Transportation back to the campuses leaves at 5 pm. We recommend weather-appropriate equipment.

Register in advance via Kide.app between September 2nd to September 18th. Transportation to Tahko and back is free of charge, but a deposit of 10 € + 0.5 € service fee must be paid upon registration. The deposit will be returned after you have porticipated in the event, the service fee will not be refunded.

Join in the Hobby Buddy service!

The Hobby Buddy service is intended for all students of the University of Eastern Finland who want to make new friends through common hobbies and interests. By filling the Hobby Buddy application, we are looking for a suitable buddy for you!

There are different hobbies - you can search for a buddy for a coffee or movie company. You can read about the searched hobbies from ISYY’s websites and fill out the application.

We’ll get in touch when the right buddy is found. We read applications and combine them together once a week.

You can try SYKETTÄ-services for free until 14th September


IMPORTANT: Remember to register and enroll via SYKETTÄ websites

If you wish to use the SYKETTÄ Sports Services, register as a user with your UEF email here, download SYKETTÄ Kuopio mobile application and enroll to the classes via the Sports Calendar. On the Sports Calendar, you can find the name of the class instructor, number of participants and the type of sport class and more information about the class.

During the free trial period, enrollment on classes and turns is not possible via the mobile application without a valid SYKETTÄ sticker. You must enroll in classes and turns via the sports calendar on the website. If  you have a valid SYKETTÄ sticker, you can enroll in classes normally via the mobile app.

You can now buy the SYKETTÄ stickers for the autumn semester or for the whole academic year. You can find more information of the stickers here. The stickers can be bought online via SYKETTÄ webpage and at ISYY offices.

  • Ball Sports package: 17 € /semester, 33 € /academic year
  • One-month sticker 15 €/month

NB Pedestrians and cyclists!

Due to the roadworks at Savilahti there are some changes in routes when arriving to the Kuopio campus by foot or by bike during August and September (approximately until 18th September). The roadwork affects also to the routes between the campus and the bus stops.

The information can be found only in Finnish, but from UEF Kamu, you can see the map with the temporary routes.

Feeling confused, exhausted, or anxious? Needing a shoulder to lean on? Student2Student peer counsellors are here to support you in all situations.

Starting or returning to your studies can sometimes be overwhelming. If you feel you want to talk to someone, anonymously if you wish, Student2Student is the place to go. The trained peer counsellors can help you find further support or the answer to a question on your mind. Discussions are confidential and free of charge.

You can reach Student2Student from Thursday the 1st of September onwards via telephone (+358 29 445 8580) or via the chat in Kamu. The service is open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. You can leave a callback request by calling the line anytime, and a peer counsellor will call you when the service is next open.

Opening ceremony of the Academic Year 2022-2023

The Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year 2022–2023 will be held on Kuopio campus on Thursday, 8 September 2022, at 1.15 p.m. in the Great Lecture Hall, Snellmania building. Before the Opening Seremony, there is a Opening Ceremony Service in the Great Lecture Hall at 12.15–12.45 p.m.

If you are new to Finnish language, start with our beginner’s course, Finnish 1A. Finnish 1A is a MOOC-style self-study course and open for all international UEF students. Registration is open throughout the academic year, and you can start this course as soon as you register in Peppi. Studies for Sustainable Future now available as a minor!

Starting from the academic year 2022–2023, the University of Eastern Finland offers a diverse and multidisciplinary minor on sustainable development, known as Studies for Sustainable Future. The minor brings together courses on sustainability from different disciplines, focusing on environmental issues and natural resources. The minor is available for all regardless of your minor.

The minor is highly topical, since the various sustainability challenges we are facing require rapid solutions that can be found through multidisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, multidisciplinary expertise in sustainability-related issues is also in high demand on the labour market.

Studies for Sustainable Future can be completed as basic and subject studies. The broad selection of courses is divided into thematic modules offered in Finnish, and there is also one module available in English.

UEF Students, get to know your campus!

Do you know where to find the ISYY office or the Student and Learning Services’ customer service desk? Are you feeling lost strolling around the campus?

Now you can familiarise yourself with your campus in advance! With the help of the Campus Orienteering mobile game, you get to navigate around the campus using an informative map. You can find the campus’ buildings, services, restaurants and many other places of interest marked on the map as checkpoints. You can play the Campus Orienteering game by yourself or as a group with your friends. The game is available to play until 30 September.

Degree student remember to pay the FSHS fee!

You can use FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service) services in the spring semester if you are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and you have registered as an attending student at the UEF.

Degree students pay the university student's health care fee to Kela. Note that Kela won't send you an invoice! The amount for the autumn semester is 35.80 €. Read more about the payment and how to pay it via the link below.

NB! If you have social security coverage in another EU/EEA country or in Switzerland or the United Kingdom, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee to Kela. However, you can to use the FSHS’s services.

Send Kela a copy of your valid European Health Insurance Card or other document showing that you have social security coverage in one of the above countries. Send it well in advance of the due date for the fee (30 September).

Wanna cross a visit to Lapland off your bucket list?

Join ESN Kuopio and ISYY as we are going far beyond the Arctic Circle to experience the real Finnish winter in the northernmost ski resort of Europe in Saariselkä, the place which has ski slopes open sometimes even in June! The trip is organised from Thu 24.11.2022 till Tue 29.11.2022.

Visit the real Santa in the Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, take selfies with the reindeers at a farm hosted by Sami people, enjoy the beautiful Arctic landscape and if you are lucky, the mesmerizing Northern lights! There is also a wide range of winter sports you can try – everything from adventurous snowshoeing and skiing to husky sledding, and even swimming in the Arctic Ocean. The group will be accommodated in atmospheric cottages on the slope of the Kaunispää-mountain, which is a perfect place for spotting the Aurora Borealis!

UEF Kuopio University Choir is a mixed choir operating at the UEF Kuopio campus. Our singers are composed mainly of current and former students, exchange students, and employees of the University.

Open rehearsals and auditions are held as follows:

  • Tue 27.9. 6–8 PM at SN100

During the open rehearsals you can follow along our normal rehearsal, and afterwards auditions are held to test your vocal range from a song of your choosing.

“Keys to Well-being – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills” online trainings are designed to improve self-management skills, which are increasingly important in the changing world of work and study. Transformation of work requires new skills and competences: time and self-management skills, resilience and adaptability, collaboration skills, new ways of thinking, taking care of well-being and finding meaning in our work.

The online trainings consist of short videos as well as in-depth trainings. The trainings can be accessed flexibly at any time that suits you. They are free of charge to UEF staff and students, and they are available until January 31, 2023. The trainings can be accessed by logging into Moodle with your UEF-account: Keys to Wellbeing – 5 Steps towards Future Work Skills.
