The Student Union of the University of Eastern Finland’s (ISYY) career skills week on 13.–16.4.2021 makes a wide array of career skills contents available for students. Career skills week is divided into four theme days: International work life, Verkostoituminen ja hyvinvointi, Career skills, and Communication skills. During the week, these themes are tackled through lectures, workshops, and panel discussions. It is possible to complete a 1 ECTS optional course about the contents of the week in the form of a learning diary.

The aim of ISYY is to create the career skills week into a yearly event to support the career skills of students. The contents of the first career skills week include expert lectures, introductions of different services, and interactive workshops. The current needs of career skills and the wishes of students about concrete tools on the recognition of their resources have been taken into account in the themes. The program of the career skills week is visible on the ISYY website. Along with ISYY, the University of Eastern Finland, Business Center Pohjois-Savo, Loimu ry, Luotsi Joensuu, Regional Council of North Karelia, and North Savo Talent Hub are participating in the week.

“The need to improve the career skills of students has been highlighted especially during the last year, when most of the time is spent with remote studies. For example, self-management and communication skills have proven their importance. In addition, there are vast differences between different fields on the improvement of career skills during studies,” says Pauliina Ryökäs, ISYY Executive Board member, who is responsible for affairs in social politics and employment.

Improvement of career skills already during studies supports learning and a smooth transition to working life. ISYY wants to contribute in providing a framework for the acquisition and improvement of these important skills.
